Moonbeam Leaves Polkadot for Base to Build an AI Agent Network

Moonbeam is migrating from Polkadot to Ethereum L2 Base to build a protocol where AI agents autonomously discover each other, negotiate tasks, and settle payments on-chain. GLMR token holders must migrate their assets to Base by July 31.

Interoperability protocol Moonbeam has announced it is migrating its ecosystem from Polkadot to Coinbase-backed Ethereum L2 Base, where it will build a dedicated on-chain network for AI agents. The new initiative, called the Moonbeam Protocol, aims to enable autonomous AI agents to discover each other, negotiate tasks, and complete payment settlement on-chain without intermediaries. According to a July 5 report cited by Korean outlet Bloomingbit from CoinTelegraph, Moonbeam described this as a strategic pivot toward what it believes is the most exciting frontier in crypto: autonomous AI agents. The team stated that AI-driven on-chain collaboration represents a long-term opportunity window worth dedicating full resources to.

No specific launch date for the new protocol has been announced. However, Moonbeam explicitly requires all existing GLMR token holders to migrate their tokens to Base by July 31, indicating that future native assets will also be issued on Base.

The move has drawn significant attention in the crypto community. Polkadot continues to lose core projects while Base rapidly consolidates its position as a go-to L2 for DeFi and AI-related initiatives. Moonbeam's decision reinforces Base's growing appeal as an infrastructure hub.

From an AI agent perspective, the "discover-negotiate-settle" workflow Moonbeam envisions aligns with earlier frameworks such as Fetch.ai and Autonolas, but Moonbeam integrates this vision into a protocol rooted in cross-chain interoperability. Whether it can deliver a working on-chain agent economy on Base will depend on product execution and ecosystem adoption velocity.

Moonbeam's pivot is both a major technical recalibration for the project and a signal of a broader industry trend: more infrastructure projects are repositioning around the AI agent value chain.

Why it matters

Moonbeam's migration from Polkadot to Base to focus on AI agent infrastructure signals the accelerating convergence of crypto and AI, and will reshape L2 ecosystem competition.
