Honda and Acura bring conversational Google Gemini AI to select models

Honda and Acura are rolling out Google Gemini AI assistant to nine Honda and three Acura models, replacing the old Google Assistant with a conversational AI that understands layered questions and retains context. Car voice assistants are getting a major upgrade. On July 16, Honda and Acura announced they are bringing Google Gemini to vehicles already equipped with Google software, enabling a far more natural conversational experience for drivers.

Gemini replaces the previous Google Assistant platform. Unlike the rigid, single-command syntax required by traditional voice systems, Gemini can understand layered questions, retain context across a conversation, and provide more coherent responses. Honda describes the experience as "more like a genuine conversation than a traditional voice command system."

Drivers can ask for directions, recommendations, and information in natural language. Beyond navigation, Gemini can summarize news stories, plan trips, and help brainstorm ideas — all without leaving the driving environment.

The update covers nine Honda models and three Acura models on specific trims and model years. Included models are the 2024+ Acura ZDX, 2025+ Acura MDX, 2026+ Acura ADX A-Spec Advance, plus Honda models ranging from the 2023 Accord Touring Hybrid through the 2026 Prelude.

"Connected technology is no longer a convenience for Honda customers — it's an essential part of the driving experience," said Jessika Laudermilk, assistant vice president of Honda National Auto Sales. "The integration of Google Gemini reflects our commitment to providing technology that enhances every journey."

This marks a shift in how automakers view in-car AI assistants — from simple navigation tools to general-purpose smart assistants that can handle information retrieval, content summarization, and trip planning.

As Google Gemini reaches more automotive brands, the in-car AI assistant landscape is heating up. The next question is how quickly other automakers will adopt similar conversational AI approaches.
