Ant Group and Alibaba Cloud Join PyTorch Foundation, Deepening Chinese Tech's Role in Global AI Open Source

Ant Group and Alibaba Cloud have announced their official membership in the PyTorch Foundation, the organization under the Linux Foundation that oversees the development and governance of the PyTorch deep learning framework — one of the most widely adopted AI frameworks globally.

As foundation members, both companies will participate in technical direction discussions, community governance, and ecosystem development for PyTorch. This marks a shift for Chinese tech firms from being mere users to co-builders of the open-source ecosystem, giving them greater influence over global AI infrastructure.

The PyTorch Foundation's existing core members include Meta, AMD, Intel, Google Cloud, and Amazon Web Services. The addition of Ant Group and Alibaba Cloud expands the foundation's Asian and Chinese representation.

For Ant Group, which relies heavily on PyTorch for production systems in financial AI, risk modeling, and recommendation engines, membership provides direct influence over framework evolution to better suit financial-grade requirements.

For Alibaba Cloud, PyTorch serves as a critical underlying framework for its AI cloud services. Deeper foundation involvement allows Alibaba Cloud to optimize PyTorch performance on its platform while retaining more AI developers within its ecosystem.
