Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI safety company founded by Ilya Sutskever, has announced a long-term partnership with Nvidia as it prepares to scale its research operations. The announcement on July 27 marks SSI’s first major public infrastructure deal since emerging from two years of stealth development.

According to TechCrunch, the partnership will provide SSI with large-scale computing resources through Nvidia’s hardware and platforms. SSI has been focused on building AI systems that are not only highly capable but also fundamentally safe — a mission Sutskever has championed since his departure from OpenAI.

Sutskever, a co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, left the company in 2024 over disagreements about AI safety approaches. He subsequently founded SSI, which quickly raised over $1 billion from prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital.

Nvidia has become the backbone of AI infrastructure worldwide, with similar compute partnerships spanning OpenAI, Anthropic, and major cloud providers. The SSI deal extends Nvidia’s reach into the AI safety research segment, a growing priority for the industry and regulators alike.

SSI stated that Nvidia’s computing platform will directly support its vision of developing safe superintelligence, emphasizing that safety must be integrated throughout the entire AI development lifecycle, not treated as an afterthought.

Industry observers note that SSI’s decision to publicly announce this partnership could signal its readiness to move from pure research toward more concrete technology roadmaps. The access to Nvidia’s latest hardware — including H200 and next-generation GPUs — could significantly accelerate SSI’s model development timelines.

A key question going forward is whether this partnership will influence how Nvidia allocates compute resources across competing AI safety organizations. As AI safety becomes a central policy issue, SSI’s progress under this infrastructure agreement will be closely watched.

Why it matters

The Nvidia deal gives SSI the compute capacity to scale its safe superintelligence research, signaling that AI safety organizations are entering the infrastructure race alongside traditional AI labs.
