OceanBase Responds to Funding Reports, Commits to AI Data Innovation
OceanBase has responded to media reports about its first external equity fundraising, stating it is fully committed to data technology and product innovation in the AI era and will maintain open communication with capital markets. Reports indicate the distributed database company is targeting 2-3 billion yuan in a Series A round to strengthen independent operations and accelerate its shift toward an AI data platform.
On July 29, OceanBase officially responded to media reports about its first external equity fundraising, stating that the company is fully committed to data technology and product innovation in the AI era and will continue to maintain open communication with capital markets. OceanBase did not disclose further details on the fundraising scale, investors, or specific progress.
Earlier media reports indicated that OceanBase is in talks with investors for a Series A round, having approached multiple top-tier investment institutions with a target of approximately 2 to 3 billion yuan. Sources say the fundraising will help OceanBase strengthen its independent operations and support its expansion into the AI data platform space.
OceanBase has been accelerating its AI data strategy in recent years. Beyond structured data, the company is also enhancing its ability to process semi-structured and unstructured data such as video. As AI applications increasingly enter enterprise production environments, database management systems are becoming critical infrastructure connecting enterprise data, AI models, and intelligent agents.
Sources say OceanBase's annualized revenue for 2026 has exceeded 1.4 billion yuan, up approximately 70 percent year-over-year. The company now serves thousands of customers primarily in China, including Bank of Communications and China Mobile, and has begun expanding into Southeast Asia, Japan, India, and Latin America.
Media reports suggest OceanBase is benchmarking against companies like Databricks, though their paths differ: Databricks extends from data analytics and AI toward databases and enterprise applications, while OceanBase starts from distributed databases and core transaction systems, expanding into enterprise-wide data management, agent data provisioning, and data services.
Founded in 2010, OceanBase was originally developed to meet Ant Group's internal database needs and has supported payment and financial core systems for over a decade. According to IDC, OceanBase ranked first in China's distributed database on-premises deployment market share in 2025, serving industries including finance, telecom, transportation, manufacturing, retail, and public services.
Looking ahead, OceanBase is evolving from a distributed database into an AI data platform. In June, it launched a new lake-house integrated AI database now being tested in dozens of customer scenarios. This fundraising represents a significant step toward independent operations and market-driven development. In 2024, OceanBase established an independent board and employee equity incentive mechanism.
These changes signal that Ant Group's incubated businesses in globalization, AI, and data are building more independent governance, incentive, and financing mechanisms, now being tested by external markets. Whether OceanBase can replicate its distributed database success in the AI database race will depend on its technology evolution and market expansion pace.
Why it matters
OceanBase's pivot from distributed database to AI data platform, coupled with its first external fundraising, signals that China's infrastructure software sector is accelerating its embrace of AI, with databases gaining new strategic valuation as AI infrastructure.
