OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Academic Researchers — Free Frontier Models for 100,000 Scientists
OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a program providing 100,000 academic researchers free access to its most advanced AI models to accelerate scientific discovery. The first 10,000 participants gained access this summer, with plans to scale to 100,000 by 2027.
OpenAI on July 29 officially launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a major initiative granting 100,000 researchers at selected academic institutions free access to its frontier AI models. The company stated in its announcement that the benefits of frontier AI should not be concentrated in a few companies and well-resourced labs.
The program kicks off with 10,000 researchers this summer, starting with institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and École normale supérieure (ENS). OpenAI plans to expand to 100,000 researchers by 2027. Participants will receive access to frontier models including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro at launch, and can invite up to four collaborators from their institution.
Workspaces come with business-grade privacy and security protections, with data not used for model training by default. Researchers gain access to over 75 life science skills spanning genetics, genomics, single-cell analysis, protein modeling, and drug discovery, along with connectors to scientific literature, genomic databases, satellite imagery, computational notebooks, and reference managers.
OpenAI shared usage data showing roughly 1.3 million people use ChatGPT weekly for advanced science and mathematics, generating about 8.4 million messages. The shift is especially visible in mathematics over the past six months, with AI evolving from occasional use to a regular part of mathematical research. A growing number of papers now acknowledge ChatGPT's contributions.
The GPT-5.6 model family is tiered by capability: Terra for balanced daily research, Luna for faster lightweight tasks, and Sol for the hardest scientific and mathematical problems. Sol scores 83% on FrontierMath Tier 4, a research-level mathematical reasoning benchmark, up from 72.5% for GPT-5.5.
This program is part of OpenAI's commitment of over $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research, building on the $50 million NextGenAI initiative and the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission. OpenAI said its strategy is not to decide which scientific problems deserve attention but to put capable tools in researchers' hands and let them pursue the questions they know best.
