NVIDIA Joins NSF State and Regional AI Hubs Program to Expand AI Research and Education Across the US

NVIDIA has joined the U.S. National Science Foundation's State and Regional AI Infrastructure Hubs program, which launched on August 4 to expand access to advanced computing, data, software and expertise for AI research and education. NVIDIA announced on August 4 that it is participating in the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) State and Regional Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Hubs program, a new initiative launching today to expand access to the advanced computing, data, software and expertise needed for AI-enabled research and education across the country.

According to NVIDIA's official blog, the program is consistent with the aims of the Genesis Mission and will support state and multistate groups of colleges and universities working together to strengthen America's AI ecosystem. It brings together private industry, philanthropic organizations, and state and local governments to expand the AI infrastructure, software, educational resources and technical support available to faculty, students and researchers.

The hubs are designed to help institutions share AI computing resources, accelerate scientific discovery and innovation, and prepare students to participate in the AI economy. State or regional consortia can pool expertise, focus on local priorities and choose flexible approaches — on-premises infrastructure, cloud computing or a combination — tailored to regional needs and economic priorities.

NVIDIA points to its 2020 partnership with cofounder Chris Malachowsky and the University of Florida (UF) as the model: the effort turned UF into the country's first true AI university and gave all Florida public universities AI compute access. UF has since grown to more than 300 AI-focused faculty, embedded AI education and research across all 16 colleges, and attracted more than $511 million in AI research awards since 2017.

The announcement builds on NVIDIA's role as a leading contributor to the NSF-led National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot program, which today's initiative extends. Through NAIRR, NVIDIA partnered with university research teams nationwide to turn computing resources into usable scientific capacity and hands-on educational opportunities for students.

The significance extends beyond hardware: the program pairs infrastructure with workforce development, encouraging degree programs, short-form certificates and stackable credentials that move learners from AI literacy into applied skills in fields such as physical AI, healthcare, energy, agriculture, manufacturing, quantum computing and cybersecurity. NVIDIA said it will support this work with training resources, educator enablement, applied learning content, technical guidance and partner platforms.

What to watch next: which state and multistate consortia are selected as hubs, how on-premises-versus-cloud designs take shape, and how the program connects regional research with workforce and economic-development strategies as it scales beyond the NAIRR pilot.
