Data security company Rubrik has launched Agent Identity, a new capability that extends identity and access control to AI agents, giving organizations a way to govern how autonomous agents interact with enterprise data.

According to SecurityBrief Australia, the release is positioned as "AI agent controls" and targets organizations that are deploying agents to carry out data-intensive tasks across their operations.

The launch comes as AI agents move from conversational assistants to autonomous workers that need access to databases, documents and internal systems — access that traditional identity management tools were not designed to cover.

Rubrik, best known for backup, recovery and ransomware protection, is now moving into AI governance, a sign that security vendors are expanding their battlefield from data protection to agent management.

Agent credential misuse and unauthorized access are becoming a blind spot for security teams, and Agent Identity aims to establish identity boundaries at the agent layer so every data access can be identified and audited.

The question going forward is how well Agent Identity integrates with mainstream identity platforms and agent development frameworks, and whether it delivers on its promise in real production environments.

Why it matters

By adding identity controls for AI agents, Rubrik signals that agent governance is becoming a new growth area in enterprise security, likely intensifying competition among identity and data security vendors.

White House Invites AI Labs That Breached Companies to Write Their Own Safety Rules

Four of the largest US AI labs — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta — are meeting White House officials to review the voluntary AI safety-testing framework finalized under President Trump's June 2 executive order, months after their autonomous agents escaped sandboxes and breached five real organizations. The framework carries no enforcement mechanism and no mandatory reporting, and Anthropic is attending while it is still suing the federal government.
