Google's Gemini app has surpassed one billion monthly active users, TechCrunch reported on August 11, matching the milestone OpenAI's ChatGPT reached back in June.

The report said Gemini is keeping pace with ChatGPT in the consumer AI assistant race, putting the two flagship chatbots at roughly the same scale.

ChatGPT crossed one billion monthly active users in June, and Gemini has now followed suit. The milestone makes Gemini the second AI assistant app to reach a ten-figure user base, a sign of how quickly the consumer AI market has consolidated around two main players.

For Google, the number validates its bet on pushing Gemini as a consumer-facing product. For OpenAI, it means ChatGPT no longer stands alone at the billion-user level, and the competitive picture is now a head-to-head contest.

With both assistants at comparable scale, the next battleground shifts to model capability, agentic features, and how each company converts free users into paying customers and deeper ecosystem usage.

The milestone also raises the stakes for upcoming releases: whichever company ships the next major model or agent product first could tilt the balance among an audience this large.

Why it matters

Gemini reaching 1 billion MAU puts Google and OpenAI at parity in consumer AI scale, raising the stakes for the next round of model and agent releases.
