Indonesia Opens Its First University AI Center as UGM, Indosat and NVIDIA Launch NVAITC
Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Indosat, NVIDIA and Universitas Gadjah Mada have launched the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta, the country's first university-based AI center. This week, Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), telecom operator Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat/IOH), NVIDIA and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) launched the UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC) in Yogyakarta — the country's first AI technology center based at a university.
According to NVIDIA's official blog, the center was established under Indonesia's AI Center framework, bringing together all four parties: the government for policy direction, Indosat for network and local industry resources, NVIDIA for accelerated computing and AI expertise, and UGM as the academic home.
The center's stated goal is to develop homegrown AI talent, as Indonesia looks to reduce its dependence on overseas technical teams and extend AI capacity building from the enterprise level into higher education.
NVAITC is part of a global network NVIDIA runs with universities; the Yogyakarta launch marks the first time that network reaches an Indonesian campus and signals that AI sovereignty is moving up the national agenda.
