Huawei-backed open-source agent openJiuwen launches WorkSwarm swarm office agents, debuts on HarmonyOS PC app market

openJiuwen, an open-source agent co-built by Huawei's 2012 Lab, Huawei Cloud, terminal, and computing units, has upgraded its swarm agents into WorkSwarm, a swarm office agent suite that is the first of its kind to launch on the HarmonyOS PC app market, with support for Windows and Mac. The company frames it as a new paradigm for office agents: AI evolves from a single assistant into a team that works alongside the user.

According to a report by QbitAI, WorkSwarm rests on four key capabilities: autonomous team formation and task orchestration, shared context and handoff, execution beyond conversation, and transparent, evolving processes. The system assembles agents with different skills according to a goal and assigns each its own task; team members share project context and the latest results, and can continue directly from where the previous member left off.

WorkSwarm offers single-agent and cluster modes for tasks of different complexity. Lightweight work such as daily queries and text edits can be handed to one agent, while tasks involving multiple roles and iterative deliveries are handled by a coordinated cluster. Member discussions, task status, execution logs, and project files all live in a unified workspace, making the entire process visible. Users can also join the team as full members and take part in a step themselves.

Official demos show two scenarios. For music creation, a single request for a coastal typhoon theme with a cinematic, narrative feel triggers WorkSwarm to assemble a seven-member music team — team lead, lyricist, composer, arranger, lead vocalist, accompanist, and interlude arranger — that handles everything from style selection and section planning to audition and revision, finally delivering 12 files including MP3, lyrics, composition plan, arrangement summary, and singing notes.

The second demo is a human-machine collaboration experiment: two AI writers and one human writer take turns adding one sentence each to the same Word document, continuing the classical essay "Yueyang Tower Ji". AI members read the existing content, locate the continuation point, and write their lines with signatures, while the human writer joins from a phone via an invitation command; the new sentence appears in the Word document on the PC and the handoff is recorded in the group chat.

The coding scenario uses the same team playbook. In the Code space, cluster mode can form a development team with frontend and backend branches developed in parallel and merged into the mainline. In a demo, a user describes a need in one sentence and the system autonomously plans tasks and completes ArkTS code, generating a calorie-tracking app installable on HarmonyOS PC. The company also claims that in cluster mode, entering a topic, audience, and style lets the system automatically assemble a team to work in parallel — research, structuring, content, and consolidation advance simultaneously, turning a serial workflow into a parallel task chain that delivers a 200-page high-quality PPT in 20 minutes.

The upgrade matters because multi-agent collaboration is moving from "multiple chat windows" toward "shared workspace plus real file execution". WorkSwarm emphasizes that agents do more than generate text: they can read and write files, operate applications, invoke specialized skills, and deliver finished artifacts. Proven role combinations and collaboration flows can be distilled into Swarm Skills and reused in later tasks.

WorkSwarm currently provides work and development spaces on HarmonyOS PC, Windows, and Mac, with a mobile entry point that lets users check messages, make decisions, or join a step after leaving their computers. As a notable move in Huawei's open-source agent camp, the open questions are whether WorkSwarm can establish the "team-based office" paradigm inside the HarmonyOS ecosystem and whether the Swarm Skill reuse ecosystem will take shape.
