A model with no confirmed identity is shaking up the open-source AI community. According to Pandaily, the anonymous Ox Alpha — free for a week on OpenRouter and OpenCode — ended DeepSeek's 56-day run atop the OpenCode ranking and set a single-day model-usage record on OpenRouter.
Chinese netizens nicknamed it Niu Lai (the bull is coming), after the animated film that turned the phrase into a meme — ox literally means bull in English. Ox Alpha targets long-horizon agent workflows rather than everyday chat: a 1,048,600-token context window, native tool calling, and multimodal (text, image, video) input.
The biggest question is its origin. The strongest case points to Zhipu AI: developer fingerprints — tokenizer output, a 1210 error code on the reasoning_effort parameter, forced image-parse failures returning Chinese prompts, and video-encoder behavior — align with Zhipu's GLM models.
The naming also fits: Zhipu's earlier anonymous release was Pony Alpha, claimed as GLM-5 in February. Still, no manufacturer or OpenRouter has confirmed anything, so the model could be Google, GLM, Xiaomi, or an entirely new player.
The feat matters because of what it ended: DeepSeek had held the top spot on OpenCode for 56 days, and Ox Alpha not only broke that streak but set a usage record with a free-access strategy, showing how eagerly the community adopts unknown strong models.
For developers, Ox Alpha signals a product direction that combines long context, native tool calling, and multimodal input — precisely the capability set agent applications need, which also explains its rapid climb on a coding leaderboard.
The real test comes after the free window closes. Pandaily notes that what will decide the model's survival is sustained developer adoption and enough compute behind it.
