Salesforce and Nvidia have a new reasoning model called Koa, and TechCrunch reports it is built on Nvidia's open-weight Nemotron model and trained specifically for sales, marketing, and customer-support work.

The headline frames it as "everything the AI labs should fear," and the framing is the point. When a company with a large enterprise install base trains its own reasoning model on open weights, the frontier labs lose part of their claim to being the only viable source of capable models in that domain.

The recipe is straightforward: take an open-weight base that anyone can host, then post-train it against business workflows that have well-defined inputs, outputs, and success metrics. Koa is not being positioned as a general assistant but as a model that does a defined set of jobs well.

That is why the enterprise angle matters more than the benchmark angle. Software vendors have long competed on process, data, and customer relationships; if the underlying reasoning capability can be trained and owned in-house, the decision to buy a frontier API shifts from capability to cost, control, and latency, and so does the negotiating power.

For Nvidia, Koa is evidence that the Nemotron family can serve as the base for vertical models inside enterprise software, which reinforces demand for the compute and tooling around it. For Salesforce, owning the model means it can iterate on features on its own schedule instead of waiting on an outside vendor's roadmap.
