Qualcomm, ZTE's nubia and Doubao Phone Assistant launch agentic smartphone nubia NaviX Ultra

nubia announced today the launch of the nubia NaviX Ultra, a new agentic smartphone that pairs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile platform with the consumer edition of the Doubao Phone Assistant. According to the announcement, the combination is meant to upgrade the assistant experience across the device and give users a personal AI assistant that is smarter, more efficient, and continuously evolving.

The three partners frame the launch as a shift of AI capability from the cloud toward personal devices. As agentic technology matures, AI is described as moving from a tool that answers commands toward a partner that understands user preferences, senses context, and proactively helps complete tasks, with smartphones named as one of the most important platforms for that shift.

On the hardware side, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 carries a custom third-generation Qualcomm Oryon CPU, a newly architected Qualcomm Adreno GPU, and a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU tuned for agentic AI. Qualcomm says these custom blocks work together to deliver strong performance with efficiency, providing the foundation for generative and agentic workloads.

On the software side, Doubao Phone Assistant on the NaviX Ultra is said to deliver a smoother, more efficient agent experience. Users can wake the model in multiple ways and keep responses fast during continuous conversation, multitasking, and cross-app operations, the scenarios that determine whether an on-device agent is genuinely usable.

Ni Fei, senior vice president of ZTE and president of nubia, said the company has held to its position as an AI phone pioneer and that the NaviX Ultra is a key step in upgrading device AI together with Doubao Phone Assistant. He pointed to the platform capability of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 plus Doubao's natural-language understanding and multitasking, describing the result as cross-domain, full-chain collaboration.

Chris Patrick, senior vice president of Qualcomm Technologies and general manager of its mobile handset business, said mobile computing is at a turning point where agentic AI is reshaping how people interact with devices. He stressed that realizing that vision requires both distributed computing power and coordination across the whole ecosystem.

The notable part of this launch is that it pulls a chip vendor, a handset maker, and a large-model application provider onto a single product line. Silicon supplies the compute and efficiency base, the phone maker handles system integration, and the model and app side supplies understanding and execution, so removing any one link weakens the promise of an assistant that actually gets things done.

What to watch next is scale and real-world behavior: response latency for the consumer Doubao Phone Assistant on this device, the stability of cross-app actions, and whether the platform-plus-device-plus-model arrangement can be replicated on more handsets.
