OpenAI Academy turns two and pilots a community trainer program

OpenAI marked two years of OpenAI Academy on September 23 and used the occasion to open a new chapter: a trainer program that hands the curriculum to community organizations. The Academy launched in September 2024 to widen access to AI training, technical guidance and community, starting with developers and mission-driven organizations working on local problems.

Over two years, OpenAI Academy has hosted more than 250 events and reached more than 4 million people with its content, bringing together educators, small business owners, developers, nonprofit leaders and community members. Its formats have grown to include self-paced courses, practical guides, in-person workshops and large multi-site events branded AI Skills Jams.

Earlier this month OpenAI introduced new Academy learning paths for knowledge workers, developers, leaders, educators and college students, who can take role-relevant courses and earn course badges by passing assessments. The company's examples are deliberately practical: a teacher adapting a lesson with ChatGPT, a small business owner building a repeatable customer-research process, a developer using Codex to plan and implement a change while keeping control of review.

Partners are central to the program. OpenAI works with national and local organizations to bring training to the communities they serve, offering recurring workshops for small business owners, educators, veterans and nonprofit leaders. Its AI Skills Jam for K-12 educators, for instance, gathered more than 1,600 teachers, administrators and district leaders across eight U.S. cities.

The centerpiece of the announcement is the pilot OpenAI Academy Community Trainer Program. Participating organizations nominate staff to learn the Academy curriculum and how to lead a practical workshop: demonstrating useful workflows, helping people apply AI to their own tasks, encouraging peer learning and supporting participants as they evaluate results. Nominees complete training and a facilitation assessment before leading Academy sessions.

Handing the curriculum to communities is really an answer to a scaling problem. AI tools change faster than in-person training programs can spread, and trust often comes from someone nearby rather than from a vendor. OpenAI says its goal over time is for more people to have someone in their community they can turn to as their needs and the tools evolve.

The company says it will keep building online courses, workshops and Academy Jams informed by participant and partner feedback. The Community Trainer Program remains a pilot, with no published count of participating organizations or coverage yet; the question to watch is whether this model scales, and how tightly it ends up tied to OpenAI's education and developer offerings.
