Anthropic Commits $11.6 Billion to Akamai in Seven-Year Cloud Deal

Anthropic has committed $11.6 billion over seven years to Akamai's cloud infrastructure, in a deal that could ultimately grow to about $20 billion. In an unusual arrangement, Akamai is giving Anthropic a potential stake of up to 5% of its stock that increases as the model developer spends more.

Anthropic has committed $11.6 billion over seven years to Akamai's cloud infrastructure, a deal TechCrunch reports could ultimately grow to about $20 billion. It is the model developer's latest move to secure compute through a long-term commitment rather than spot purchases.

The arrangement stands out on two counts. First, it is a bet on CPU-based capacity rather than the GPU clusters that dominate most AI infrastructure announcements. Second, it comes with an equity twist rarely seen in cloud procurement.

According to TechCrunch, Akamai is giving Anthropic a potential stake of up to 5% of its stock, and that stake grows as Anthropic spends more. In effect, the customer's consumption is tied to the vendor's share price, aligning the two companies far more tightly than a standard supply contract would.

For Anthropic, multi-year commitments have become the standard way to lock in compute. As training and inference workloads keep expanding, guaranteed supply shapes how quickly the company can ship new models and products. Committing seven years out buys priority when capacity is tight.

For Akamai, the value lies in the customer. The company built its business on content delivery and edge networking and has been pushing further into cloud services; landing a frontier model developer of Anthropic's scale gives that effort its strongest reference point to date.

The CPU angle is the part worth watching. Most of the industry's narrative centers on GPU buildouts, but not every workload — inference, data processing, edge delivery — needs a GPU. If Anthropic routes part of its load to this capacity, the deal becomes a test of whether CPU-centric clouds can carry meaningful AI work.

What to watch next: how the $11.6 billion is spread across seven years, what triggers the path toward $20 billion, and how the equity grant vests against spending milestones. Those terms will determine whether this is a real transfer of compute or mostly a headline.

Why it matters

The deal pulls CPU capacity back into the center of the AI infrastructure conversation and shows frontier labs increasingly willing to trade long-term commitments and equity structures for supply certainty. If others follow, vendor relationships could shift from straightforward purchasing to deep strategic alignment.

UpGuard finds roughly 16,000 Supabase databases exposing personal data

Security firm UpGuard says about 16,000 databases hosted on Supabase were exposing personal data to the public web, including names, addresses, phone numbers and a smaller set of passwords and tokens. Supabase's CISO points to a shared-responsibility model and "secure by default" defaults, but the finding shows how easily vibe-coded apps leak data through basic misconfiguration.

Astra and Claude Opus 5 crack two long-unsolved Enigma messages

Two cryptanalysts used OpenAI's newest model, Astra, and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 to break Enigma messages that had resisted researchers for years, including one unbroken since 2005. The keeper of a well-known Enigma archive validated one solution last week, calling the model's performance that of a very professional cryptanalyst and archive researcher.
