DoorDash Launches an AI Agent You Can Text to Order Food

DoorDash has launched an AI agent that lets customers order food by texting, turning a chat thread into a new ordering surface, TechCrunch reported on September 30.

According to the report, rather than browsing a menu item by item inside the app, users describe what they want in a message and the AI agent handles the ordering flow.

The motivation is straightforward: DoorDash is looking for an edge over Uber Eats and Grubhub. As delivery speed and merchant supply converge, the interaction layer becomes a fresh axis of competition.

The hard part of conversational ordering is interpreting vague intent. Real requests rarely name a dish; they sound like “two people, something light, here in half an hour,” and the agent has to translate those constraints into an executable order.

Placing the agent inside an existing channel like texting also lowers the barrier to use, since customers do not have to open a separate app or learn a new habit — a meaningful factor for repeat orders.

One caveat: the report does not specify which markets the agent will reach or on what timeline, so what is confirmed today is the product direction rather than its coverage.
