OpenAI and Synopsys to Build GPT-Synopsys for Chip Design
Synopsys and OpenAI will jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialised model optimised to operate Synopsys EDA tools and run semiconductor design workflows. The deal adds revenue sharing and a global go-to-market partnership, aiming to turn frontier models into native expert users of chip-design and verification tools.

Synopsys and OpenAI said they will jointly develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialised model optimised to operate Synopsys EDA tools and carry out semiconductor design workflows. The agreement also includes a revenue-sharing arrangement and a go-to-market collaboration to make the model available to customers worldwide.
According to Electronics Weekly, agentic AI today already connects general-purpose models to EDA tools to run chip-design workflows. The partnership aims at the next step: making frontier models genuine experts in using those tools — learning to run them the way experienced engineers do, interpret their outputs, and iteratively optimise designs through the tools, so the model becomes a native expert user.
Technically, GPT-Synopsys combines OpenAI frontier models with Synopsys' EDA technology and domain expertise, letting the specialised model reason about chip design and verification while directly operating Synopsys' tools.
Engineers will delegate design objectives — from PPA optimisation to timing and verification closure — to agents that run the tools, interpret results, implement changes and iterate toward verified outcomes for engineer review.
GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure, is designed to interoperate with customers' agent harness systems, and will be deeply integrated with Synopsys.ai and the Synopsys Autopilot agentic AI platform.
Both companies' leaders framed the deal as a step change. Synopsys president and CEO Sassine Ghazi said the future of semiconductor engineering requires dramatically accelerating chip design without compromising PPA or first-time-right silicon. OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman said the pair are bringing frontier intelligence to chip design to help engineers explore more designs and reach a working chip faster.
Commercially, the joint service will bundle compute, model and licenses, with early technology engagements already under way with leading semiconductor customers. Synopsys and OpenAI say GPT-Synopsys will feature enterprise-grade security, governance and access controls; customer data is not used to train the model, is encrypted at rest and in transit, and can be managed through configurable retention, audit and permission controls.
The deal matters because it pushes agentic AI from general office and software tasks into chip design, a field where correctness carries enormous stakes. If a frontier model really can become an expert user of EDA tools, the pace of design iteration and engineer productivity could be redefined. The things to watch next are early customer results and whether this frontier-model-plus-vertical-toolchain bundling becomes a template other EDA and industrial software vendors copy.
Why it matters
If early customer engagements go well, chip design could become a field driven directly by frontier models, and deep AI-EDA bundling may set a template for the industry.
