A new report says the artificial intelligence capability gap between the United States and China has narrowed to a record low of 3 percent, with DeepSeek identified as a leading driver of the shift. The finding was reported by Inshorts.

The same report places DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash sixth in its September ranking. That placement is used as evidence that Chinese models are closing the distance with their US counterparts in capability terms.

Metrics like a 3 percent gap typically blend several dimensions — benchmark performance, release cadence, cost, and availability. Because methodologies differ between research groups, the number is better read as a directional signal than as an absolute verdict.

For the industry, the message is that top-tier model performance is converging and the window of clear leadership is shrinking. A gap once described in generational terms is being compressed into single-digit percentages.

For DeepSeek, being named the primary driver raises its visibility in overseas evaluations. Singling out V4.1 Flash also suggests that particular model played a central role in this comparison round.

What matters next is the report's methodology, its sample of models, and whether other evaluators reach similar conclusions. A single ranking and a single percentage still need independent data to be corroborated.

Why it matters

If independent evaluations echo the finding, a narrowing US-China capability gap could reshape procurement and investment decisions and further erode the pricing premium of leading models.
