Anthropic on Tuesday announced an expansion of its Claude for Startups program, offering qualifying companies subsidized access to its AI models along with a package of benefits.

Unveiled during Anthropic's SF Tech Week event, the new version provides a free year of Claude Team, the company's paid plan for groups, with up to five premium seats, plus $1,000 in API credits for building with Claude.

Companies also gain access to Claude Marketplace, which lets them build plugins for the service, and can book virtual office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team.

"We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone," Anthropic said in its announcement, adding that partnering closely with founders and developers is central to its mission.

To qualify, companies must have been founded within the last five years or received funding within the last two years; interested firms can apply through the Claude for Startups program page.

The move fits a broader contest among model providers to lock in developer ecosystems, using free seats and credits to lower the cost of experimentation while steering builders toward their own marketplace.

What to watch next: how many startups apply, whether the program widens its scope or regions, and how it compares with rival vendor programs chasing the same early-stage builders.

Why it matters

It lowers the cost for startups to try Claude, widening Anthropic's entry point into the developer ecosystem and intensifying competition among vendor startup programs.

Nvidia has outlined a security framework for AI agents and highlighted OpenShell, its open-source runtime for enforcing controls outside the agent's reasoning. The framework argues security depends on the full agent stack rather than the model alone, applying identity, access control and verifiable safeguards to systems that reason, use tools and adapt their actions.
