Barcelona's AI Factory Accelerator Goes Fully Operational as NVIDIA Opens Inception Access

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center's AI Factory Accelerator Programme is now fully operational, offering startups sovereign compute, technical support and training. NVIDIA said some BSC AI Factory services became available through its Inception portal on October 20, with a MareNostrum 5 extension set to widen access across Europe.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center's AI Factory Accelerator Programme is now in full operation after a pilot phase, giving startups access to sovereign compute, technical support and training. In a blog post published on October 20, NVIDIA said that from that day some BSC AI Factory services can be requested through the NVIDIA Inception portal for startups.

BSC AI Factory is one of Europe's first AI factories and the first in Spain. According to NVIDIA, it has delivered more than 800 services to private and public-sector clients since launching in April 2025, and an upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5 will route supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI factories across Europe.

Three Inception members were named AI Champions at the pilot programme's demo day. Qatium's water-network platform, already used by more than 250 utilities in 16 countries, is in early production with Neural Water Intelligence models trained on MareNostrum 5 using cuGraph, PhysicsNeMo and Nemotron; OneCareAI, a BSC spin-off, uses NIM microservices to flag hidden atrial fibrillation in apparently normal ECGs; and Avatia built a voice-first multi-agent system that acts as an agentic coworker for pharmaceutical sales representatives.

The cohort also includes Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart, spanning precision agriculture, medical imaging and knowledge access, speech services, enterprise security, sales intelligence and compostable packaging. NVIDIA frames the range as evidence of how far applied AI has travelled, from stroke prevention to replacing petroleum-based plastics.

The structure of the arrangement matters. BSC supplies public supercomputing capacity framed as sovereign compute; NVIDIA supplies accelerated hardware, software libraries and the Inception funnel. For a startup, public supercomputing is shifting from applying for machine hours to calling a service, which is the real change in the AI factory model.

Some caution is warranted: the account comes from NVIDIA's own blog, and its emphasis is ecosystem attachment and customer vignettes rather than independent evaluation. BSC AI Factory's service catalogue, allocation rules, pricing and cross-border data arrangements are not disclosed, and the 800-plus services come without revenue or renewal figures.

Three things are worth watching: when the MareNostrum 5 extension goes live, which specific services BSC opens to Inception members, and whether companies such as Qatium, OneCareAI and Avatia move from pilot projects to production deployments. The speed at which Europe's AI factory network connects to commercial accelerator ecosystems will shape how cheaply these startups can buy compute.

Why it matters

Connecting public supercomputing to a commercial accelerator network lowers the compute barrier for early-stage European AI companies, though allocation rules and real costs remain opaque.

Altman Pitches Three Paths for Safe AI, Including a 'Terrible' Plan to Melt Rival GPUs

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman presented employees with three scenarios for keeping advanced AI under human control, according to a Chosun Ilbo report citing The Information. The options range from an IAEA-style global regulator to a CERN-like joint lab — and a last-resort plan to let the first superintelligence dominate, which Altman himself called 'terrible.'

Reuters: OpenAI moves to raise $30B before Anthropic's IPO

OpenAI is speeding up a new funding round targeting about $30 billion, aiming to have the money committed before Anthropic's initial public offering, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Sources described the contest as a two-horse race, while the report did not set out the investor list or the valuation terms of the round.

Memory Tensor open-sources MemT 1.0, a memory-native model that learns what to remember

Memory Tensor released and open-sourced MemT 1.0 on October 20, a memory-native large model that moves memory out of external retrieval and into the model's own architecture, learning when to read, write and update it. Its technical report says MemT-1.0-Flash and MemT-1.0-Nano averaged 50.6 and 47.0 closed-book across 11 memory benchmarks, ahead of the strongest parameterized memory baseline by 12.5 and 8.9 points.

Anthropic pitches an AI safety bill that kicks in only at $1B in damage or 50 deaths

Anthropic is pitching lawmakers a bill that would let the government block an AI model only after it causes more than $1 billion in damage or 50 deaths, according to a report by Pasquale Pillitteri. The proposal replaces capability-based oversight with an extremely high harm threshold, turning the frontier-AI debate into an argument over two concrete numbers.
