Meta's AI companion Muse tops 10M U.S. downloads in 40 days
Meta's AI companion app Muse passed 10 million U.S. downloads within 40 days of launch, a milestone only 11 other apps have reached, TechCrunch reported on October 20. The report also says Muse is retaining users at higher rates than rival AI apps, suggesting Meta's distribution machine is translating into the AI assistant market.

Meta's AI companion app Muse passed 10 million U.S. downloads within 40 days of launch, TechCrunch reported on October 20. Only 11 other apps have reached that mark, and one of them is Meta's own Threads.
The report also says Muse is retaining users at higher rates than rival AI apps. For a companion product, that combination matters more than the download figure alone: it suggests people are not just trying the app but building a habit around it.
Meta's first advantage in AI apps is distribution. Placing a new product behind the entry points of existing social apps allows a cold start in a matter of weeks, which helps explain how Muse reached eight figures so quickly. Threads already demonstrated that playbook, and also its weak point: strong installs do not automatically produce strong retention.
The emphasis on better retention is partly an answer to scepticism about Meta-style growth. If the data holds, it suggests companion AI is moving from curiosity-driven installs toward steady everyday use, and that the product form itself may be settling.
That shifts where competition in AI companions is fought. Model quality still matters, but for ordinary users the felt difference comes from memory, tone, and how well the assistant fits a specific context rather than from benchmark scores. Meta's account system and social connections give it an edge on exactly those dimensions.
The caveats deserve equal weight. Ten million is a U.S. download figure, not a global one, and downloads are not revenue. Paid conversion and long-term retention remain the hard problems for companion apps, and the distance between a milestone and a business is long.
Three things to watch: whether Muse's retention curve holds after three months, whether Meta extends the product to more markets, and whether the app gets wired into its advertising or subscription machinery. Those questions will say more about whether AI companions are a standalone business or a feature of social products.
Why it matters
If the retention data holds up, Muse becomes the first large-scale evidence that companion AI can move from novelty installs to routine use, forcing rivals to re-weigh distribution against product experience.

DeepSeek open-sources an inference tool, turning up the pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic
DeepSeek has open-sourced an inference tool, a release Gizmodo frames as fresh pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic. Because serving costs rather than model weights increasingly decide who wins price-sensitive enterprise deals, opening the deployment stack could undercut the per-token economics that closed labs depend on.

Bloomberg: Eric Schmidt holds about 1% of Anthropic
Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, holds roughly a 1% stake in Anthropic, about half as much as the AI lab's CEO Dario Amodei, according to a Bloomberg report cited by TechCrunch. The disclosure offers a rare look at the ownership structure of a leading AI lab, even though the timing, cost and implied valuation are left unstated.

NVIDIA's Cosmos3-H-Dreams Tries Generative Simulation on Clinical Surgery
NVIDIA published a Hugging Face blog post on Cosmos3-H-Dreams, a generative simulation effort aimed at reconstructing clinical surgery as repeatable synthetic scenes. The work pushes world models from general video generation toward a highly specialized medical setting where real footage is scarce and hard to obtain.
