Reddit Moves to a Logged-In Experience as Search Traffic Dries Up

Reddit has announced a shift toward a logged-in experience, saying AI is changing how people find information and that its open-web model no longer protects its audience or its business. The move reframes the trade-off between being crawlable and being defensible.

TechCrunch reported on October 29 that Reddit is shifting to a logged-in experience. The company’s stated reason is that AI is changing how people find information online, search traffic is drying up, and Reddit needs to rethink its place in the open web.

The announcement is about direction rather than a single feature. More content and interaction move behind a login, in an effort to protect Reddit’s audience and its business instead of leaving every page open to outside crawling.

The causal chain is easy to trace. For more than a decade Reddit grew on search results pages: a user arrives with a question, lands on a thread, reads it, leaves. When AI search and chat assistants answer directly instead of sending the click, that chain breaks.

A login wall solves two problems at once for Reddit. It turns passing visitors into identifiable, addressable users, and it stops content from being consumed at zero cost, preserving leverage in negotiations with other platforms and data users.

The costs are just as direct. The open web is part of Reddit’s culture, and many of its best threads are valuable precisely because outsiders can find and read them. Requiring a login raises the barrier for newcomers and may erode visibility in search.

The industry significance is that Reddit has made a common anxiety explicit. When AI summaries replace clicks, the traffic distribution that content platforms live on stops working, and companies are answering in different ways: licensing deals on one side, tighter front doors on the other.

What to watch is execution: which communities and content types move behind the login, whether crawlers and AI scrapers are treated differently, and whether pushback from users and moderators forces a partial retreat.

Why it matters

Reddit has put an industry problem on the record: AI summaries are cutting the traffic path content platforms depend on, and the login wall is one of the few levers available right now.

For an AI company heading to public markets, the length and language of those disclosures often say more about cost structure, regulation and technical uncertainty than the revenue figures do.
