Apple Watch's Audio Intelligence enters beta with 15-second rewind and Siri recaps

Apple has begun beta testing Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12, adding sound and song recognition plus two features that listen to conversations. Live Rewind shows the last 15 seconds of speech as text, while Siri Recaps turns a conversation into bullet points without saving raw audio or identifying speakers.

Apple has moved its Apple Watch "Audio Intelligence" features into beta testing, starting with developers on the iOS 27.3 update, TechCrunch reported on November 2. The technology was first announced at Apple's September "Surprise and Shine" hardware event and brings four opt-in capabilities to Apple Watch Series 12: important-sound detection, song identification, catching up on conversations, and note-taking.

Sound recognition is aimed at deaf and hard-of-hearing users, helping them spot sirens, alarms or doorbells on the watch. Song recognition uses Apple's Shazam to identify the track and artist playing nearby. Both are closer to accessibility and retrieval than to recording people.

The more sensitive pair are the features that listen to human conversation. Live Rewind lets a wearer double-press the digital crown to see the last 15 seconds of speech as a text snippet on the watch face, useful for catching an address, a list of specials or verbal directions. A chime and animation signal that something is being captured; the snippet is deleted after 30 seconds unless saved to the standalone Siri app that shipped with iOS 27, and an "Ask Siri" option lets users ask about a term that was just mentioned.

Siri Recaps goes further, summarizing a conversation as a short sentence plus bullet points that may include dates, deadlines, pricing or payment details. Apple says the feature does not identify speakers, save raw audio or produce word-for-word transcripts, and it will not record while a user is listening to music through headphones or using noise cancellation. At the end of the day, users are prompted to review saved recaps and choose what to keep.

The design is a direct response to the privacy backlash around AI wearables. Meta's AI glasses and similar devices have made ambient recording a public argument; Apple is instead offering short, visible, audible and revocable snippets, with every feature off by default and enabled individually. It is not trying to turn all-day audio into a searchable database.

Strategically, Audio Intelligence extends Apple Intelligence from the phone to the wrist. Watches have always been constrained by screen size and input, and voice plus summarization sidesteps both. But the beta is limited to developers, so accuracy, language support and feature details can still change.

Three things are worth watching: when the features reach general users, how Live Rewind handles noisy environments and non-English speech, and how regulators and venues respond to wearable listening. Apple has written its privacy story into the product design, but the real test will happen in restaurants, meeting rooms and classrooms.

Why it matters

The next wearable-AI fight will be less about capability than about consent and visible recording in public spaces; Apple's short-snippet design is one workable compromise.
