ByteDance's Seedance Is Quietly Taking Over Hollywood: $9/Minute AI Video Generation Wins Filmmakers
ByteDance's AI video generation tool Seedance is rapidly gaining traction in Hollywood, with costs as low as $9 per minute for video-plus-audio generation — far below Google Veo's $24. Producers are using it openly and secretly, with some studios receiving $2 million offers for unrestricted access.
ByteDance's AI video generation tool Seedance is quietly but decisively taking over Hollywood, as reported by Chinese tech media QbitAI and the Los Angeles Times. The Chinese AI video model has become a preferred tool for a growing number of Hollywood filmmakers.
According to Artificial Analysis data, Seedance generates video with audio at approximately $9 per minute, significantly undercutting Google Veo at $24 per minute. A 15-second HD clip costs roughly $5 to generate, meaning a 90-second concept short could have a pure generation cost of mere tens of dollars.
Seedance's Hollywood push has been systematic. During the Cannes Film Festival this year, Seedance-associated teams appeared at industry events. In May, its sister product line Dreamina was present at Amazon MGM Studios' "AI on the Lot" event. ByteDance is methodically bringing Seedance into the physical spaces where Hollywood creators, producers, and AI film companies converge.
More striking is the "quiet adoption" phenomenon. One producer revealed: "I know many studios in the industry haven't officially approved using Seedance, but they're all using it tacitly… it's kind of an unspoken rule."
Paranormal Activity producer Steven Schneider announced in May a hybrid AI horror film titled "Terrarium," with director Jason Zada confirming extensive use of Seedance for generation. Zada described the creative process as "more fluid because you can keep regenerating."
Zada also revealed that Seedance demand has been so high that it has offered some major Hollywood studios $2 million for unrestricted special access. Seedance provides these creators with free monthly generation credits and early access to unreleased features.
In the competitive landscape, Seedance is going head-to-head with Google's Veo, Runway, and Luma AI. Notably, OpenAI's Sora, once considered the strongest contender, has ceased operations. A JioStar executive noted that Seedance's rise comes down to "focusing on pleasing filmmakers and creating more cinematic imagery."
According to the State of Generative AI Media report, media company spending on AI is projected to grow from $2.6 billion in 2024 to $12.5 billion by 2029. In this intensifying US-China AI video model race, Hollywood producers are no longer prioritizing nationality. "We're not about loyalty — we'll use whatever is best," director Zada stated plainly.
Why it matters
ByteDance's Seedance is breaking the barrier for Chinese AI tools in the Western creative industry, reshaping the global AI video generation landscape and marking the first time a Chinese video model has gained substantive market traction in Hollywood's core production ecosystem.
