China unveils world-first AI for ADANES technical roadmap, integrating AI with advanced nuclear energy
At the 2026 World AI Conference, Chinese scientists unveiled the world's first AI for ADANES technical roadmap, using physics-intrinsic world models to intelligently control advanced nuclear energy systems. A new industry alliance was also launched to drive AI-nuclear fusion across data, modeling, LLMs, simulation, and safety frameworks.
At a WAIC 2026 forum titled "AI and Advanced Nuclear Energy: Building a Sustainable Intelligent Future," Chinese scientists unveiled the world's first AI for ADANES original technical roadmap. ADANES (Accelerator-Driven Advanced Nuclear Energy System) is a China-originated nuclear technology that integrates fuel breeding, spent fuel transmutation, and power generation, boosting uranium utilization from 1% (conventional pressurized water reactors) to 95% while drastically reducing high-level nuclear waste.
Academician Zhan Wenlong, chief commander of the ADANES project, noted that while ADANES changes the safety logic of traditional reactors through subcritical operation, it introduces new challenges in accelerator-target-reactor strong coupling and long-term stable operation. Academician Zhao Hongwei stated: "Looking at global industry development, complex nuclear systems face persistent technical challenges in safe operation and efficiency — and AI provides an entirely new approach to solving them."
The AI for ADANES technical roadmap adopts a "data + physics model + expert knowledge triple-driven" paradigm, building a physics-intrinsic world model intelligence system to resolve the core contradiction between AI's "black-box uncontrollability" and nuclear industry's "zero-tolerance for safety errors." He Yuan, deputy director of the Institute of Modern Physics and ADANES chief engineer, described ADANES as "a complex system where micro-physics and macro-engineering intertwine," saying traditional subsystem modeling and local control are approaching their capability limits — AI is not merely an algorithmic tool but a transformative productive force.
At the forum, academicians, universities, nuclear power leaders, AI enterprises, and capital firms jointly launched the AI for ADANES Global Innovation Alliance. Five collaboration pillars were established: open shared data resources and benchmark task systems; co-building physics-intrinsic world model systems; developing nuclear-specific LLMs and agent platforms; building open shared simulation and verification platforms; and完善ing safety, trustworthiness, and engineering demonstration frameworks.
The industrial impetus is clear. Bai Yunsheng, former head of CNNC's Strategic Research Institute, cited data showing China's data center electricity consumption reached 170 billion kWh in 2025 and is projected to hit 800 billion kWh by 2030. AI computing clusters require uninterrupted baseload power that renewables cannot consistently provide, while nuclear power — fully domestically controllable and carbon-free — offers a natural complement. China also faces high external dependence on oil and gas, making domestically controlled advanced nuclear energy a national security priority.
The alliance outlined a phased development plan: short-term (1-3 years) building shared simulation and testing platforms while optimizing CiADS intelligent control systems; medium-term (3-8 years) developing a full-stack AI control system and engineering solutions around a 300MW ADANES demonstration facility; long-term (10+ years) completing the full-chain AI-enabled advanced nuclear energy technology system.
He Yuan concluded: "This forum is not just an industry exchange event — it is a new starting point for China's original ADANES technology as it moves toward an intelligent development stage." If successful, this roadmap could open two high-growth tracks: nuclear-powered AI computing parks meeting massive low-carbon electricity demand, and lifecycle intelligent management slashing nuclear O&M costs while expanding commercial applications. China could also export complete advanced nuclear intelligence solutions globally, shaping international AI-nuclear governance and standards.
