WAIC 2026 spotlights AI agents as industry shifts from model breakthroughs to practical deployment

The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC 2026) kicked off in Shanghai in July, with AI agents as the central theme. The conference underscored a pivotal transition in China's AI industry: from the past two years' large language model parameter races to real-world deployment and commercial impact. Multiple exhibitors showcased agent-driven applications across manufacturing, healthcare, education, finance, and energy.

The shift in focus reflects a maturing industry consensus that the value of foundational models is realized through agents that bridge AI capabilities with concrete business workflows. One highlight was the global debut of the AI for ADANES technical roadmap at a WAIC sub-forum, where a physics-intrinsic world model system demonstrated how agent-based technology could tackle complex industrial control challenges in advanced nuclear energy.

Industry observers noted that agent sophistication is evolving from single-task execution to multi-step autonomous planning. Several companies launched agent development platforms and toolchains aimed at lowering the barrier for enterprise deployment.
