Meta Tests AI Bedtime Story App StoryKit for Personalized Children's Tales

Meta is testing an AI-powered bedtime story app called StoryKit, which generates personalized children's stories complete with custom characters, settings, moral lessons, and background music. The App Store listing promises parents: "You don't need to write a single word."

First spotted in the App Store by 9to5Mac, StoryKit was confirmed by Meta to TechCrunch as a limited regional pilot. A Meta spokesperson described it as a creative storytelling app for crafting personalized, imaginative storybooks for children, noting that it uses AI safety filters, has no social features, and is restricted to users aged 18 and above.

To create a story, users first select a character — they can "snap a photo of their favorite toy or person to bring them to life," per the App Store description. Then they describe the story world and choose a lesson, allowing the AI to "weave in values like kindness, courage, or empathy without it feeling like a lecture." The app generates both the narrative text and accompanying music.

This is not Meta's first foray into consumer AI applications, but previous attempts have been controversial. Earlier in July, Meta removed an Instagram deepfake generation feature after significant user backlash. StoryKit represents a comparatively safer bet — no social interactions, no deepfakes of real people, just a focused family use case.

Critics, however, question whether AI should replace one of humanity's oldest traditions: spontaneous storytelling. Child development experts argue that the real value of bedtime stories lies not in narrative perfection but in the natural interaction and emotional bonding between parent and child. AI-generated stories, no matter how polished, may diminish that spontaneous connection.

The app's availability is currently limited to select countries, and Meta has not announced a global rollout timeline. The key questions going forward are whether positive pilot data could lead to deeper integration with Meta's social platforms like Facebook or Instagram, and how effectively the AI safety filters will perform — ensuring child-appropriate content is the central challenge for any parent-facing AI product.
