Bluesky’s AI Assistant Attie Evolves Into an Open Social Research Tool With Quests Feature

Bluesky’s AI assistant Attie has launched a new feature called Quests, enabling users to ask the AI open-ended questions to research news and trends across the Bluesky social network and the broader AT Protocol ecosystem. This marks Attie’s expansion from a no-code feed builder into a full-fledged social research platform.

Bluesky’s AI assistant Attie has announced a new feature called Quests that transforms the product from a no-code custom feed builder into an open-ended social research tool. Quests allows users to ask the AI questions to analyze information and news trends across the entire Bluesky social network, known as the Atmosphere, as well as any app built on the underlying AT Protocol.

Users can, for example, ask Attie to pull trending topics or identify the most influential accounts in a particular field or geographic region. The feature turns Attie into a research assistant capable of making sense of the decentralized social web.

“Attie’s AI is a tool that helps you make sense of the internet, helping you fight back against the proliferation of misinformation and noise by giving you the tools to find the truth yourself,” wrote Bluesky’s chief innovation officer Jay Graber, who stepped down as CEO in March. The company is now led by Toni Schneider, former founding CEO of Automattic.

Attie originally launched in March as a product that lets users design their own algorithms, create custom feeds, and eventually vibe code their own apps — all without programming. It remains free for now, though Bluesky has explored charging for the service in the future.

The expansion comes as Bluesky’s user growth has slowed over the past eight months. The network doubled to 40 million users by last October but now reports around 45.6 million registered accounts. The company has been developing tools to both grow and potentially monetize its user base.

Graber noted Attie is being redesigned with accessibility features and a new logo, with more changes ahead. The new experience is in beta, with users invited from a waitlist over the coming weeks.

The move highlights a delicate balancing act for Bluesky: its user community includes many who dislike AI for economic, political, and environmental reasons, yet the company needs revenue to sustain itself and the AT Protocol development it leads. In March, Bluesky announced a $100 million Series B round that closed in 2025, giving it runway to experiment with products like Attie, premium subscriptions, and power-user tools.

Bluesky’s bet is that AI tools designed to help people understand their information environment — rather than fill it with confusion — can prove their value even on a platform where AI skepticism runs high. The evolution of Attie from a feed customizer to a cross-platform research tool suggests the company believes AI-assisted information discovery is central to its growth strategy.

Why it matters

Attie’s expansion into an open-ended research tool represents a strategic bet on AI as the key to user growth and monetization for decentralized social networks, even when navigating deep community skepticism about AI.
