AI Hosts and Sandbox Demand Rescue Intel's Datacenter CPU Business — Q2 Revenue Surges 59% YoY

Generative AI and agentic AI are unexpectedly reviving Intel's datacenter CPU business. According to The Next Platform, Intel's Data Center & AI group posted $6.26 billion in Q2 2026 sales, up 59% year-over-year and 24% sequentially — the highest server CPU growth the company has seen in fifteen years.
The primary driver is not the traditional server refresh cycle but the unique demands of AI infrastructure. Intel executives confirmed on the Q2 earnings call that AI host servers require large numbers of high-performance CPU cores with substantial I/O and memory bandwidth for management tasks, while the emerging agentic AI paradigm is driving demand for AI sandboxes that execute actual operations (typically in Python) rather than just the inference workloads handled by GPUs.
CEO Lip-Bu Tan reported on the earnings call that Intel's 18A process yields exceeded targets by 25% in Q2, up more than 50% from Q1. Risk production for 14A is on track for the second half of 2027, with high-volume ramp committed for 2028. Additionally, Intel's EMIB-T packaging technology has attracted interest from TSMC customers facing CoWoS-L capacity shortages.
Intel's custom chip business has reached an annualized run rate of $2 billion, with CFO David Zinsner projecting growth toward $4 billion in the “not too distant future,” targeting a $100 billion total addressable market for custom chips.
Analysts note that this CPU renaissance is more a market tailwind than a direct result of Intel's technical superiority. Having missed multiple attempts at the GPU market, Intel still lacks a competitive low-latency AI inference accelerator to rival Nvidia's GPUs or Grok's LPUs. Its partnership with SambaNova — which just closed a $1 billion Series F at an $11 billion valuation — is important but Intel does not control that technology.
The DCAI group posted $2.47 billion in operating profit, a 39.5% margin — the highest in five years but still below the 50% operating margins Intel enjoyed during its datacenter heyday a decade ago. Intel Foundry revenue reached $5.77 billion, up 30.5%, though it posted an operating loss of $2.09 billion (34% narrower than a year ago), with external customers contributing just $293 million.
For the industry, this signal is worth examining: AI's continued scaling demands not only GPU clusters for “thinking” via inference but also vast CPU resources for “doing” via execution environments. Agentic AI's rise suggests the role of CPUs in AI infrastructure may have been severely underestimated. The key questions ahead are whether Intel can convert this CPU windfall into sustainable competitive advantage and whether it can finally ship a genuinely competitive AI inference accelerator.
