Google has launched Gemini Spark in India, a persistent background AI agent designed to operate around the clock. The product is available to Google AI Pro subscribers and represents a major push by Google into the AI agent product category.

Unlike conventional conversational AI assistants, Gemini Spark is built to run continuously in the background, autonomously managing complex multi-step tasks without requiring constant user input. It can handle digital workflows across Google Workspace applications including Gmail, Google Docs, and Calendar.

A notable feature is that some of Gemini Spark's capabilities continue to function even when the device is offline, thanks to deep integration with Google's cloud infrastructure. Users can delegate tasks to the agent and receive results later, rather than needing to be actively engaged throughout the process.

India was chosen as one of the first markets for Gemini Spark since its announcement at Google I/O 2026, reflecting the country's strategic importance as a testing ground for AI products with its massive mobile-first user base and diverse use cases.

The launch positions Gemini Spark as Google's answer to Microsoft's Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT Agents in the rapidly evolving AI agent space. The shift from reactive chatbots to proactive, persistent agents represents a fundamental change in how AI assists with daily work.

As AI agents evolve from demonstration features to practical productivity tools, questions about reliability, security boundaries, and user control are likely to intensify alongside the rollout. The India launch will provide Google with valuable real-world usage data to refine the product for broader global availability.

Why it matters

Google is pushing AI agents from demo to production with a 24/7 persistent model that could fundamentally change how users interact with AI assistants in daily work.
