Global interest in China's Kimi K3 model strains capacity and intensifies pressure in the US-China AI race
Moonshot AI has suspended new subscriptions to its Kimi K3 model after global demand overwhelmed capacity within days of the July launch, the latest sign of China's AI momentum. Analysts say the strain shows the Beijing startup lacks sufficient compute chips to serve the surge, even as the 2.8-trillion-parameter open-source model tops coding rankings.
Moonshot AI has suspended new subscriptions to its Kimi K3 model after a flood of global demand overwhelmed capacity within days of the July launch, according to Milwaukee Independent. The Beijing-based startup said demand had pushed close to the limits of its current capacity over the past 48 hours.
"Kimi K3 has received far more love than we expected," Moonshot AI wrote in an X post, adding that it would prioritize existing subscribers and temporarily pause new ones. "We're adding capacity as fast as we can and will reopen new subscription spots in batches," the company said, also posting a similar message on Chinese social media.
K3's public rollout in July, aimed at challenging more advanced models from Anthropic, OpenAI and others, has rattled U.S. rivals. At 2.8 trillion parameters, it is deemed the world's largest open-source AI model, and it topped the chart of major advanced models on the Arena evaluation platform for front-end coding capability after release.
The capacity crunch highlights the challenges Chinese AI models face in serving a growing user base at home and abroad as the U.S.-China tech race heats up. "New model releases generally trigger massive interest, which can strain existing compute infrastructure," said Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at Omdia. "This does show Moonshot AI does not have sufficient compute chips to serve the current surge in demand."
Su said the key reason was more likely that Moonshot did not fully anticipate the surge in K3's popularity, and that the model is "very demanding" in terms of compute requirements, making compute allocation challenging and expensive.
K3's release has also pressured the stocks of American technology titans on worries that more affordable Chinese AI models may undercut the pricing power and demand at U.S. AI companies, even as U.S.-led restrictions already bar China from accessing some of the world's most advanced chips.
K3 is one of the latest Chinese AI models drawing strong global reactions: Alibaba recently previewed its Qwen3.8 Max model with 2.4 trillion parameters, and in June Chinese startup Zhipu, or Z.ai, rolled out GLM-5.2, which saw rapid adoption across the world.
What to watch next: how quickly Moonshot expands capacity and reopens subscriptions, and whether the demand surge turns into sustained pressure on U.S. AI valuations and pricing power.
Why it matters
The subscription pause underscores how quickly global appetite for China's open-source models can outrun compute supply, intensifying the U.S.-China AI race narrative. Watch for capacity expansion timelines and knock-on effects on U.S. AI stock valuations.
