Meta debuts Muse Code, a terminal AI coding agent to take on Anthropic and OpenAI

Meta has launched Muse Code, a terminal-based AI coding agent now in beta for macOS and Linux, powered by the new Muse Spark 1.2 model. The tool challenges Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex, handling planning, coding, validation, and persistent background agents across large repositories.

Meta has entered the AI coding agent race with Muse Code, a terminal-based tool now available in beta for macOS and Linux, directly challenging Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex.

Muse Code is powered by the new Muse Spark 1.2 model, a coding-focused update described as delivering gains in code generation, debugging, codebase understanding, and long-running developer workflows.

Unlike ChatGPT Codex and Claude Code, Muse Code currently has no dedicated app interface — it installs with a one-line command and is aimed at complex software engineering tasks across large repositories.

Meta says Muse Code can plan changes, write code, validate its work, and coordinate persistent background agents that remain active throughout a session; a local event log records model calls, tool use, approvals, and edits, so work can resume after a crash.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the release on X, describing Muse Code as a terminal coding agent that takes on complete software engineering tasks across large repos, and Muse Spark 1.2 is also available through the Meta Model API with expanded global access.

The launch continues Meta's accelerated push into coding AI: the company replaced Llama with Muse Spark in April, shipped Muse Spark 1.1 in July with a paid API for developers, and now offers a full agent product.

Coding agents are one of the most hotly contested fronts in AI, and Muse Code gives Meta a direct stake in developer workflows that have so far been dominated by Claude Code and Codex. Watch for independent benchmark results, pricing, and whether Meta adds hosted or graphical versions next.

Why it matters

Meta moves from model provider to developer-tool competitor overnight, intensifying the coding agent wars against Claude Code and Codex.
