Keep launches Super AI Membership with a voice-interactive AI running coach

Keep launched its Super AI Membership on Friday, timed to China's National Fitness Day, with AI voice-interactive running as the flagship feature. The AI can answer questions mid-run, adjust pace, trigger a metronome, and even switch music, marking the fitness app's first attempt to sell AI as a standalone subscription.

Keep, the Chinese fitness app, launched a Super AI Membership on August 7, timed to China's National Fitness Day on August 8. In a hands-on report published the same day, Chinese tech outlet QbitAI detailed the flagship feature: AI voice-interactive running, which upgrades one-way voice announcements into a real-time conversational coaching experience.

For Keep, the shift from one-way broadcasting to participatory judgment is exactly what Super AI Membership is meant to deliver. Runners can ask questions mid-run, and the AI judges — based on their live status — whether to keep the pace or adjust it, then keeps interacting through the rest of the route. The same logic extends to pre- and post-workout scenarios. Keep summarizes the idea as "the more you train, the better it knows you, the healthier you get."

QbitAI's test run showed the AI doing more than answering: when the reviewer forgot to warm up, the AI suggested a slow jog instead; when cadence was unknown, it turned on a metronome set to 175 beats per minute; when music was wanted mid-run, it switched to an upbeat track. But when the reviewer playfully asked the AI to find a restaurant and order food, it refused — the assistant knows its boundaries.

The membership positioning is clear: the regular membership keeps courses, plans, and basic tools for users who know what to train, while the Super AI Membership targets those who want personalized scheduling, real-time judgment, and continuous companionship. Keep stresses that existing member benefits remain untouched, so nothing is being repackaged and resold.

The launch carries a bigger bet for Keep, which describes itself as all-in on AI and posted its first annual profit in 2025. The company wants AI to move from technology spending to a service users actually pay for, and the membership is its first attempt to price AI separately. It is a shift from content delivery to service delivery.

That monetization path is emerging across the industry: early AI was about saving companies money, then models matured and moved to the product front end, and now leading players are packaging AI capabilities into paid services directly. Keep is essentially applying that playbook to fitness — at a moment when most AI features are being given away free, choosing to charge for AI is itself a bold experiment.

The open question is whether users will keep paying for AI companionship, and whether Keep can convert National Fitness Day traffic into Super AI Membership subscribers. If the paid logic holds, consumer fitness apps will have a new template for turning AI into revenue.

Why it matters

Keep is betting that AI can be sold as a service rather than given away as a feature; if the Super AI Membership converts, it could become a template for AI monetization across consumer fitness apps.
