Ugreen teams up with Qwen on AI NAS devices for the home

Chinese consumer electronics brand Ugreen has partnered with Alibaba's Qwen on AI NAS devices aimed at the home, according to a Yicai Global report published on 14 September. The tie-up points to a broader push by Chinese model makers to put AI into consumer hardware rather than relying only on cloud APIs.

Chinese consumer electronics brand Ugreen has teamed up with Alibaba's Qwen on AI NAS devices for homes, according to a report from Yicai Global published on 14 September. The partnership puts assistant-style AI into household hardware rather than routing every request through the cloud.

A NAS, or network-attached storage device, is what families and small teams use to keep photos, video and documents in one place on their own network. An AI NAS adds local compute and model capability on top of storage, so searching, organising, question answering and generation can happen on the device instead of in a remote data centre.

For Ugreen, the move extends a business built on consumer electronics accessories into a position at the centre of the home's data. Its NAS line gives it a foothold in home storage and, potentially, in a local intelligence hub, while partnering on models avoids the cost of building a foundation model in-house.

For Qwen, home hardware is a deployment surface that differs from phones, PCs and cars. Cloud access requires connectivity, metered billing and involves privacy trade-offs; running models on a device in someone's living room requires a delivery and support model built for the edge, a direction Chinese model vendors have been testing as they look for revenue beyond API calls.

The appeal for users is less about running a model than about privacy and availability: family photos, documents and personal data stay local, and basic retrieval still works on a weak or absent connection. The costs sit on the other side of the ledger — hardware price, how often models are updated, and how much local compute the box can carry.

The report did not disclose which devices will ship, when they will go on sale, what they will cost, or whether local model updates are planned, and neither company has published further technical detail. The question to watch is whether Ugreen treats Qwen as a system-level default or as one optional feature, and whether competition in home AI hardware shifts from storage capacity to on-device model experience.

Why it matters

The tie-up moves model competition closer to the living room: if a home NAS becomes a dependable edge AI hub, vendors could shift from metered API revenue toward longer-term hardware-linked licensing and ecosystem deals.
