OpenAI Unveils Sponsored Agents and New Ad Tools With HubSpot and Shopify Integrations

OpenAI has laid out a set of AI-powered advertising experiences led by Sponsored Agents, along with new tools for marketers and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. The direction suggests that ads inside AI assistants will become conversational and actionable rather than simple display placements.

OpenAI has published “Reimagining advertising with AI,” a look at a set of AI-driven advertising experiences it is building. The headline item is a format the company calls Sponsored Agents, joined by tools aimed at marketers and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify.

The connecting theme is integration. HubSpot represents marketing and customer-relationship workflows, while Shopify represents commerce and orders. The pitch is that advertisers can plug existing operational pipelines into OpenAI's own product surface rather than working around it.

Sponsored Agents point to a shift in what an ad actually is. A conventional ad occupies a slot on a page: a user sees it, clicks, and leaves. An agent-shaped ad can, in principle, introduce, compare and even carry out steps inside a conversation, which makes the interaction considerably deeper.

For the advertising industry, the signal is that the AI assistant is turning from an information gateway into a commercial one. If people grow used to asking an assistant to shortlist and decide on their behalf, the format, pricing and measurement of advertising all have to be rethought.

For merchants, the HubSpot and Shopify integrations lower the barrier to entry. Smaller businesses may be able to describe campaign intent in natural language instead of navigating a dense ad console, which is likely why these integrations sit in the same announcement.

What is not yet public is equally notable. No pricing, market coverage or performance figures accompany the announcement, and it remains unclear how Sponsored Agents will convert in real scenarios, how clearly they will be labelled, and how users will react to commercial recommendations appearing inside a conversation.

What is clear is that advertising has become one of OpenAI's serious commercial bets. Two things are worth watching: how quickly the format opens up to more markets, and how the company's main competitors respond.

Why it matters

If Sponsored Agents ship broadly, AI assistants will monetise beyond subscriptions, reshaping how advertiser budgets and e-commerce traffic are allocated.
