Meta's Muse is outpacing ChatGPT's early mobile launch

Meta's new AI agent Muse has drawn more downloads and daily active users in the United States and Canada than ChatGPT did over the same stretch after its mobile debut, according to estimates from Appfigures cited by TechCrunch. The comparison covers only the early post-launch window and rests on third-party estimates rather than Meta's own figures.

Meta's new AI agent Muse is posting stronger early mobile numbers than ChatGPT did at the same stage. TechCrunch, citing estimates from the app analytics firm Appfigures, reports that Muse has racked up more downloads and daily active users in the United States and Canada than ChatGPT recorded over the equivalent period after its mobile debut.

The figures come with a caveat. Appfigures works from store and usage-side data, so these are third-party estimates rather than numbers released by Meta, and the comparison is limited to the window immediately following launch.

Even with that caveat, the comparison carries signal. ChatGPT's mobile launch has become a reference point for consumer AI products, and a newcomer beating that baseline on early scale suggests an unusually fast cold start in the North American market.

Meta's own distribution is the obvious backdrop. A large portfolio of social and messaging products generally lowers the cost of reaching first-time users, which can produce a steep early curve — something worth weighing when reading launch-period numbers.

Early downloads and DAU, however, are not retention. For agent-style products the real dividing line is task completion, frequency of daily use, and willingness to pay; launch notifications and the novelty of a new assistant can lift the start of the curve without carrying the rest of it.

Three things to watch: Appfigures' retention and engagement numbers for the following months, whether Meta chooses to publish any official metrics, and how ChatGPT and other competitors respond on comparable features. Those data points will decide whether Muse's early lead is a distribution-driven spike or a lasting shift in user habits.

Why it matters

The numbers put consumer AI assistants under a dual test of distribution and retention: Meta has the reach, but a short lead is what follows if usage fails to hold after launch.
