OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Plugins With App-Like Interfaces and Automations

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's plugin system. According to the report, updated plugins get dedicated sidebar homes, so users can reach them directly from the conversation interface instead of summoning them through text each time.

Beyond the entry point, plugins also gain interactive panels and file viewers. The panels mean a plugin no longer has to present itself as plain text replies, while the file viewer makes it easier to inspect file contents inside the conversation.

OpenAI is also improving plugin discovery, so users can find available plugins more easily, and adding support for automations, which lets plugins take part in longer, multi-step workflows.

The direction of the update is clear: plugins move from a call made inside a chat to an app-like surface with a fixed place, its own interface and the ability to be orchestrated. What changes is how plugins exist inside ChatGPT.

The value of a sidebar home and interactive panels lies in reducing the friction of repeated use. Once a plugin has a fixed location, users no longer have to restate the same request precisely in every turn.
