OpenAI Launches Dots, a Bubbly Agentic Avatar Untethered From Hardware

OpenAI has launched a product called Dots, which TechCrunch describes as a bubbly agentic avatar.

The defining design choice is that Dots are meant to operate independently of any specific hardware or interface. In other words, their existence is not tied to one device or one fixed entry point.

The other key element is how they work. According to the report, Dots pursue user-defined goals continuously in the background with minimal oversight.

Together those two traits change the rhythm of interaction: instead of opening a chat and making a request, a user sets a goal and lets an agent keep working toward it. The unit of interaction shifts from a single prompt to a standing objective.

Being hardware- and interface-agnostic also makes Dots feel less like a feature inside an app and more like a portable identity or proxy that follows the user. The relationship is no longer defined by one interface.

Running continuously with minimal oversight raises obvious accountability questions. How goals are set, how progress is inspected and who steps in when something goes wrong will determine whether this kind of product becomes part of daily use.
