Replit drops Anthropic as OpenAI takes over as default model provider

Replit CEO Amjad Masad said over the weekend that the company is no longer working with Anthropic, with OpenAI set to replace it as the platform's default model provider. Claude will remain available to customers on Replit, but the default slot, which is the model most users meet first, now belongs to OpenAI.

Replit is changing the vendor behind its default model. In a TechCrunch report published on October 17, Replit CEO Amjad Masad said over the weekend that the company is no longer working with Anthropic, and that OpenAI will replace Anthropic as the platform's default model provider.

The same statement draws a boundary around the change: Claude is not disappearing from Replit. According to Masad, Claude will still be available to customers on the platform, it simply will not be the default any more.

That distinction matters because the default is what most users actually meet. For a browser-based coding and deployment platform that sells natural-language software creation, the default model shapes the first app a new user generates and the first error an experienced user debugs. Changing it resets the baseline experience without removing choice.

Within the candidate information available, only two things are firmly established: OpenAI takes the default slot, and Claude remains accessible to customers. Whether price, performance, or a deeper commercial arrangement drove the switch is not something the reported facts settle, so reading the move as a verdict on model quality would be premature.

The signal extends beyond one company. Coding and agentic software work is among the workloads model vendors compete hardest for, because it maps directly to paid usage. When a well-known platform hands its default position to OpenAI, other platforms and their developer communities tend to read it as a marker of momentum.

It also shows how switchable these relationships have become. With multiple models wired into a single platform, the default is an operational setting rather than a long-term lock-in, and quality, latency, and price inside the same product can shift with a vendor decision.

What to watch next: whether Replit publishes a timeline and a public rationale, how OpenAI's models perform and are priced inside the product, and whether Claude becomes a secondary option in practice even while remaining listed. Those details will decide whether this is a messaging moment or a real migration of developer habits.

Why it matters

Swapping the default immediately changes what new Replit users experience and repositions the platform on cost and performance, while marking a visible loss of coding workload share for Anthropic.
