YTL AI Labs launches frontier AI coding platform ILMUcode at Universiti Malaya
YTL AI Labs launched ILMUcode, a frontier AI coding platform, at Universiti Malaya, pairing an agentic coding assistant with ILMU-GLM-5.3, the newest model built with Z.ai. Eight hundred first-year computer science students at the university will get RM100 in monthly credits for three months to build with the platform.
YTL AI Labs on October 2 launched ILMUcode, a frontier AI coding platform, at Universiti Malaya (UM), aiming to give Malaysian developers, students and aspiring software builders access to advanced coding capabilities through sovereign AI infrastructure. The platform pairs an agentic AI coding assistant with ILMU-GLM-5.3, the newest addition to YTL AI Labs' ILMU family of models, developed in partnership with Z.ai.
According to The New Straits Times, the launch was officiated by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. ILMUcode is designed to support the whole software development process, from understanding complex codebases and writing or modifying code to troubleshooting problems and turning ideas into working software.
UM becomes the first university in Malaysia to introduce ILMUcode to its students. Eight hundred first-year students at its Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology will receive RM100 in monthly credits for three months — up to RM300 each — as the new academic semester begins.
UM vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the initiative gives computer science students access to frontier AI coding capabilities while strengthening Malaysia's technology talent pipeline, adding that the university is equipping the country's next generation of technology builders.
YTL AI Labs chief executive officer Foong Chee Mun said ILMU brings together Malaysia's own AI capabilities with the best technologies from around the world. He said the company is building its own flagship models while partnering with leading AI firms from Nvidia to Z.ai to bring their capabilities into the ILMU family, while remaining sovereign.
Beyond its flagship multimodal model, the ILMU portfolio includes speech recognition, text-to-speech and embedding models. With Nvidia, YTL AI Labs developed the agentic ILMU-Nemo models based on Nvidia Nemotron open models, which power ILMUclaw. The company says its flagship multimodal model tops the MalayMMLU benchmark for Bahasa Melayu.
ILMUcode joins a growing product line that already includes ILMUclaw, which lets users build autonomous AI agents, and ILMUchat, its conversational AI platform available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The coding push extends the ILMU portfolio from conversation and agents into AI-assisted software development.
The launch moves sovereign AI from a slogan into concrete tools and classrooms, linking models to Malaysia's talent pipeline. What to watch next is how ILMUcode performs in real use, whether it spreads to more universities and enterprises, and how quickly YTL AI Labs iterates on its models built with Z.ai and Nvidia.
